Minutes from the Steering Group Meeting 1/10/11

Announced the next movie screening
Discussion of transition Philadelphia mission statement and goals initiated

Suggestions included
1.  Developing a handout with sustainability organizations for each neighborhood
2.  Educating about energy – ie using simple fans for energy savings at home.
3.  Working with community gardens?
4.  Working to encourange alternative transportation
5.  Staying together!!!   We are headed into challenging times and this group is really important.  We should build consensus on fewer rather than more goals.
6.  Raising awareness
7.  Networking with other groups – should this be done now or in a year or so when we are more established?
8.  Connecting with the sustainable business network – how can a connection be made.
9.  Forming a community which can respond to the challenges ahead of us with calmness.

Video of steps 1-6 of transition viewed by group.

We discussed working with area grouwheel raise awareness of transitionLay foundations – so when we show a bike movie – invite bike coalition and have them bring a friend

We discussed transition LA as a model for an urban transition initiative.  They have a google map with people and neighborhood pods – maybe mapping people who come here and others on the meetup

A member stressed the importance of reading the transition handbook.  Transition is an entirely different approach to organizing

A member suggested collecting a series of articles to provide people an opportunity to get more information.

We discussed open space – a collective group process for organizing meeting to break down into workgroups

We discussed the overwhelming  despair of having the conversations about peak oil/climate chamge over and over again and having no visible impact – “its like passenger on bus where driver is drunk, you can talk about it all day, but it doesn’t change the fact the driver is drunk”. Someone else argued – we want to show people the value of local solutions – its ok to be off that bus.

Angela  attended the steering committee meeting if the Media Transition group  – described how the organization is well developed.  They network with the like minded groups at potlucks and reach out to these organizations have events going on too that.

We decided to facilitate meetings by switching facilitators weekly.

Bob suggested we document decisions and action items, money spent.  Do we need more minutes.

We discussed the vision for transition Philadelphia – should it be city wide or neighborhood based – we concluded that as the group expanded, it will naturally be more neighborhood oriented, but would be city wide initially by necessity.

We agreed to these Goals for this year
1.  Community mapping – think what the unleashing might be and take notes – ie next great cities – missions and contacts
2.  Awareness Raising Events – we will plan a years worth.  Can we have the web site integrated with a calender –
3.  Promotion committee – to get the word out.  We will continue working on the pamphlet and mission statement

We decided to have biweekly meetings – still looking for a location.  Members will try to find a location and get back to the group.
We agreed that at the next meeting we would break down unto working groups for part of the meeting.

We discussed using Personal interaction rather that written information as a way to convince people of our predicament

We discussed Base camp – software program which could help coordinate the group.  We may be able to gain acces to it.

Bob presented a proposition for reviving the do-it book.

Thanks for coming out to our first movie screening!

A big thank you to everyone who came out to our first movie screening! We watched ‘The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil’ and had a great discussion about what Peak Oil means to us as Philadelphians. We hope that you all can make it out to our next movie screening which is going to be tentatively held on 1/24/11. Please spread the word and feel free to bring some friends!

After the movie screening, we held an interest meeting for our Steering Group. We had about 20 people stick around to introduce themselves and let the group know where they would like to see Transition Philadelphia head. So far, we have a group of very ambitious, creative, and talented people ready to get to work on creating a more resilient future for Philadelphia! Our first official Steering Group Meeting will be held on 1/10/11 at 7pm at the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center. If you’d like to be involved in steering the path for Transition Philadelphia, please come out!

Keep checking back for more updates!
We hope you all have a Happy New Year!

Marcus the Dolphin for Transition Philadelphia!

Jay and myself brought Marcus (a large stuffed dolphin that happened to be squatting in my living room for too long) down to Washington DC in order to set him free to roam the world at the Rally to Restore Sanity this past weekend. I decided to do a bit of shameless promotion for our Transition Philadelphia blog while we were at it by writing this URL on his face. He was last spotted hanging out in a tree at the rally. If anybody knows his whereabouts, please tell him to write! Here are some pictures:
